I hate that I can't write anything without plastering it with emoticons!
Anyone know of a solution for snapping yourself out of this stupid habit?

I'm also pretty sh*tty with exclamation marks too. In fact, I think it's probably all forms of punctuation. Ellipses, hyphens (em-dashes) - and brackets! Eek! :P

I know that feeling. Find someone who hates them and get them to shout at you each time you use one. That's been helping me.

Perhaps we need an escrow type service for all written communication, where someone can check it over for me before it sends. Hell - we can probably automate something.Better still, have it randomly copy in a piece of a previous communication to replace all emoticons etc - so the threat of revealing something personal and/or private serves as a deterrent.
